Education
Pre-College & Public
ReNUWIt’s Pre-College and Public Programs used the topic of water to inspire young people to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
RET Program
ReNUWIt hosted high school and middle school teachers through summer Research Experience for Teachers (RET) programs. Teachers spent 8 weeks in the lab, and developed lesson plans to bring back to their classrooms. Mentors also visited classrooms during the academic year.
How to get involved:
- ReNUWIt is no longer hosting RETs. You can still apply to Stanford’s Summer Research Program for Teachers.
Young Scholars Program
ReNUWIt hosted high school students through summer Young Scholars programs. Students spent 6-7 weeks in ReNUWIt labs, and participated in personal/professional development and enrichment activities. They presented research posters at the end of the summer, and received certificates upon completion of the program. Many of our Young Scholar alumni went on to major in STEM fields in college.
How to get involved:
- Apply to Stanford’s Raising Interest in Science and Engineering (RISE) program and indicate you would like to work on a water-focused project.
SMART INCLUDES
The SMART INCLUDES Collaborative engaged high school students and teachers in stormwater sampling and research. Participants spent a week in the summer learning techniques, then applied these techniques in their home watershed with mentorship from ReNUWIt researchers.
Watch a 3-minute video about the program and its goals.
Stormwater Design Challenge
ReNUWIt co-developed a water-based City Design Challenge in partnership with the Ingenuity Lab at the Lawrence Hall of Science. Challenge participants learned about stormwater as they designed and built model cities, then tested them to see what happens to water and pollution during rain events.
How to get involved:
- Visit the Ingenuity Lab at the Lawrence Hall of Science.
- Volunteer with your kid’s class if their school attends the Orange County Water District Children’s Water Education Festival.
- Make your own Stormwater Design Challenge kit
